Social statistics

Letโ€™s produce some statistics using open data provided by the National Health Service. The following datasets are from the Scottish Health and Social Care Open Data platform

More precisely, it provides the number of live and stillbirths by hospital of birth sourced from the Scottish Morbidity Record 02 (SMR02). As we are interested in population growth, letโ€™s filter it to include only live births

Hospitals by Births

Letโ€™s match hospital codes with hospital names from another dataset, then group them by location and sort by number of births.

On the podium we have:

๐Ÿฅ‡The Princess Royal Maternity Unit (Glasgow)

๐ŸฅˆRoyal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France

๐Ÿฅ‰Aberdeen Maternity Hospital

Which is what we expect since Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen are, respectively, the most populous cities in Scotland. Source: Wikipedia
